Have you ever wanted a pet dragon? Because my niece has. She was inspired by the movie “How To Train Your Dragon!” It's one of her favorite movies, so we're really excited about the new release “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” now in theaters!
My niece was really excited to find out that Toothless isn't the only Night Fury . . . and what adventures will ensue with Light Fury, the new white dragon! I love the movie series, so I'll be taking her. It's going to be such a fun movie, filled with action and surprises. I also love the message of finding the courage to face the unknown. We can't wait!

To celebrate the movie, we made these paper plate dragons (since my niece can't have a real dragon!) and I want to show you how we did it. These paper dragons have an articulating head and tail, and are so fun for kids to make. Children of any age can participate and make a Night Fury and Light Fury of their very own!
Make a Paper Plate Dragon
Gather These Supplies
- Paper plates – about 3 – 5 per dragon
- Acrylic paint – I recommend Apple Barrel Black
- Mod Podge or FolkArt Glitter Paint (optional)
- Foam sheet (kids' section of Michaels)
- Paintbrushes
- Markers
- Scissors
- Brads
- Craft glue
- Wiggly eyes
- Hole punch
- Sharpie
- Pencil

Start with one paper plate. Draw the dragon head on the plate, then cut out. Trace the shape you just cut out and cut another head out.
Parents might want to do this for their smaller children and then have them cut them out, while older children will likely want to do the drawing themselves.

The next step is to make a wing. You can also use one wing to trace the other. Keep in mind that you want the edge of the plate to be the edge of the wing. It looks so fun!
Glue these two wings together and let dry.

Cut the center of the body out using another paper plate. You'll want two oval shaped pieces of relatively the same size.
![](http://modpodgerocksblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Dragon-2-front-legs.jpg)
Time to cut out the front legs. Draw one front leg, cut, and then trace as you did before.
![](http://modpodgerocksblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Dragon-2-tail.jpg)
Trace and cut out your segments for the tail. Since the tail is long, you'll cut out using the trace method so that you can glue two pieces together. When you've gotten everything cut out, glue the two pieces together for each segment of the tail.
At this point, if you are making a Night Fury, you'd paint all of your pieces with black acrylic paint. Since Light Fury is white, you'll just leave as-is. OR add some Mod Podge Sparkle to enhance your dragon. Have fun with it! Let all the pieces dry.

Cut an eye out of foam – making it look like a raindrop. Mark the pupil with a Sharpie.

Add the eyes to the head pieces with craft glue, and then add a mouth and nose as shown. Glue the two head pieces together and let dry.

Glue the body pieces on either side of the wing, and then trim off the piece that sticks out with scissors.
Poke holes into the paper plates and then add the brads, segmenting the legs, tail, and head. You can see what I'm talking about in these photos:
